Originally hailing from the tropical forests of Brazil, The Begonia Maculata thrive in warm environments with strong filtered light and consistent moisture. With a relatively rapid growth rate, they can attain a height of over one meter high with stunning delicate flowers that bloom throughout the warmer months. Make sure to keep your Begonia out of direct sunlight as the sun can burn the leaves and fade the silver spots on the leaves.
The Begonia Maculata stands out as one of the most beautiful Begonia species. The silvery-white polka dots on its deep olive-green leaves appear almost surreal, as if meticulously painted by an artist. Yet, it's a testament to the enchanting wonders of nature.
If your Begonia is getting leggy, or you just want to shape it, you can trim it back a bit. Pinching and pruning your Begonia will help create a fuller and bushier plant. New stems will grow from where you prune. If your plant grows too tall, the best time to prune and maintain height is in late autumn. This is the end of the active growing season. The plant is done flowering and slows down over winter.
Maculatas prefer their soil moist of the time, but It always pays to let the top few centimetres of their soil dry out before rewatering. These plants easily develop root rot if they’re kept too wet, so never water when the soil is super soggy. These guys hate having soggy feet.
They don’t like getting their leaves wet, so bottom watering is the best method, and it’s always best to avoid misting their leaves. If you want to increase humidity for them, stand them in a shallow tray with pebbles and water.
