The Bat Flower is one of the most extraordinary blooms in the plant world, a true showstopper for anyone drawn to the unusual and exotic. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this striking plant produces deep purple-black or pale white "wings" that spread up to 20cm across, framing a cluster of smaller blooms at the centre, while long, delicate filaments (often compared to whiskers) trail dramatically downward.
The overall effect is uncanny, resembling a bat in mid-flight, which is exactly how the plant earned its name.
Thriving in warm, humid conditions with filtered light and evenly moist soil, it can produce multiple flowers throughout the warmer months.
Water regularly but allow the plant to dry out slightly between watering's. Keep potting mix dryer during the cooling months. Adding fertiliser to the weekly watering will keep it flourishing.
